Merger brings dividends - Ward 162

August 24, 2016 08:18 am | Updated 08:20 am IST - CHENNAI:

Formed by merging four wards of the erstwhile Alandur municipality that falls under Alandur Zone — is a fast-developing locality.

With more and more people settling here, new areas are being developed in the ward and the number of houses or flats on streets is still being enumerated. The proximity of the ward to areas such as Velachery, Guindy and Grand Southern Trunk Road is one of the main reasons residents choose to settle in the ward.

Like many other suburbs, the merger with the Chennai Corporation has brought a fresh lease of life to this ward. Small buses connecting interior areas with the Alandur Metro Rail station (Asarkhana) and Nanganallur have reduced the commuting problem to some extent.

However, the ward is not without its share of problems. Residents’ delight over blacktopped roads, LED-fitted street lamps and construction of stormwater drains was short-lived after the roads were dug up for various development projects. For instance, Thillai Ganga Nagar third main road is being dug up for constructing a stormwater drain.

“The move to equip the ward with a comprehensive water supply and underground drainage network is welcome. Rejuvenation of Adambakkam Lake should be taken up for maintaining groundwater level,” said K.S. Sankaranarayanan, secretary of Thillai Ganga Nagar Welfare Association.

Water draining facility on Inner Ring Road and connecting stormwater drains to take the rainwater alone to the Adambakkam Lake should be worked by the Corporation and Public Works Department, he said.

Of the three parks in his ward, two have been developed in the last five years and one is coming up at Thiruvalluvar Nagar 3rd Street in Alandur, which was in a state of neglect all these years.

DMK councillor P. Muthu said that he has solved many long- pending issues such as road and water supply improvement projects despite being in the Opposition for five years.

“Garbage piling up in street corners are history, and if brought to notice, it would be attended to immediately,” he said.

On the need to rejuvenate the Adambakkam Lake, the councillor said he has sought the local area development fund from Rajya Sabha MP R.S. Bharathi and Alandur MLA T.M. Anbarasan. Both have agreed that the lake will be rejuvenated, he said.
