Aspiring teachers in the State will now have to start planning their careers quite early.
With the recently revised system of weightage, a candidate’s marks, beginning from the higher secondary level, will now be taken into account for selection and recruitment of secondary grade teachers and graduate assistants.
According a recent government order issued by the School Education Department, weightage will be given to an individual’s academic qualification in class XII, her diploma in teacher education (D.T.Ed), her degree, B.Ed and her teacher eligibility test (TET) score.
Following the first TET in July, a committee was constituted in September comprising the minister for school education, sports and youth welfare, principal secretary, school education department, chairman, teachers recruitment board, and director of school education. The committee was formed to select and recruit candidates who had cleared TET as secondary grade teachers and graduate assistants, and it recommended these modalities to the government.
Secondary grade teachers
For selection and appointment of secondary grade teachers who have secured over 60 per cent in the TET, of a total of 100 marks, 60 marks weightage would go for marks secured in TET, 25 marks for the D.T.Ed or diploma in elementary education examination and 15 marks for the higher secondary examination.
As all the marks granted are weightages, they will be granted in proportion to the actual marks scored in the various examinations.
The weightage awarded for the 60 marks is common for both Secondary Grade Teachers as well as Graduate Assistants. Those who have secured above 90 per cent in TET would be granted 60 marks, above 80 per cent and below 90 percent, 54 marks, above 70 per cent and below 80 per cent, 48 marks and above 60 percent and below 70 percent, 42 marks.
Secondary Grade Teachers who have scored above 90 per cent in their Higher Secondary Examination would be given 15 marks, above 80 per cent and below 90 per cent, 12 marks, above 70 per cent and below 80 per cent 9 marks, above 60 per cent and below 70 per cent, 6 marks, above 50 per cent and below 60 per cent, 3 marks and those who have scored below 50 per cent get 0.
Similarly, Secondary Grade Teachers who have scored above 70 per cent in their D.T.Ed or De.Ed will be awarded 25 marks, and those who have scored above 50 per cent and below 70 per cent will be given 20 marks.
Graduate assistants
For graduate assistants, 10 marks weightage would be awarded to the higher secondary examination, 15 marks for the degree exam, 15 marks for the B.Ed Exam and 60 marks for the TET exam scores. Again, the marks given will be proportionate to actual scores.
Graduate Assistants who scored above 90 per cent in their Higher Secondary Examination would be awarded 10 marks, above 80 per cent and below 90 per cent would be given 8 marks, above 70 per cent and below 80 per cent would be given 6 marks, above 60 per cent and below 70 per cent, 4 marks, above 50 per cent and below 60 per cent, 2 marks, and below 50 per cent, no marks.
Those who have scored above 70 per cent in their degree and B.ed examination would be granted 15 marks, and above 50 per cent and below 70 per cent, 12 marks. While Graduate Assistants who have scored below 50 per cent in their degree examination would be given 10 marks, no weightage would be awarded for those who score below 50 per cent in their B.Ed examination.
For appointment of secondary grade teachers, the existing procedure — selection through the employment exchange in State-wide seniority — will continue until the Supreme Court verdict in a Special Leave Petition by the government in 2008 is delivered. The teachers recruitment board will recruit 5,451 secondary grade teachers and 18,343 graduate assistants based on TET, including the one to be held on October 14.
