The Tamil Nadu government has announced a solatium of Rs. 3 lakh each to the families of Monisha Kathiresan and Nandhini Moorthi, the 13-year-old victims of a wall collapse at their school on Monday.
Another girl, Sandhya Sakthivel, who was injured is being treated at Fortis Malar Hospital, and the government will take care of all her medical costs, a press release said. A sum of Rs. 30,000 has already been given to the hospital.
‘Sandhya stable’According to M. Anand, orthopaedic surgeon at Fortis Malar, Sandhya came in with her right foot injured. There was swelling and tenderness in her right foot and left leg.
“On her right foot, there were multiple fractures to the toes, and her big toe was crushed. We performed a procedure on the big toe using Kirschner wires (stainless steel pins) to hold the bones in the toe together so it can grow normally,” said Dr. Anand. The other toes were bound with plaster of Paris, he said.
There was also a minor blood clot on Sandhya’s left leg which is being treated with ice packs and medication. “She is doing well and is stable now,” said Dr. Anand.
A press release from Fortis Malar Hospital said all three girls were brought in to the emergency room at 1.05 p.m. Two of the girls had suffered head injuries with ear bleeds and nasal bleeds, though no external injuries were seen.
They were unresponsive, with no pulse felt and blood pressure not recordable. They were declared dead after an ECG. The bodies were later taken to Government Royapettah Hospital for autopsy.
PWD inspects the siteA team of engineers from the Public Works Department inspected the school area where the wall collapsed. According to sources, though it is a private institution, the officials have reviewed the place as it comes under their jurisdiction. The team will submit a report on the technical reasons for the collapse to the Chief Minister.
