Visitors to the new office of the Commissioner of Police on Poonamallee High Road are looking forward to better facilities. Those who have been to the Rs. 25-crore office complex said there was a lack of basic amenities such as drinking water, seating area, toilets and signboards.

The 1.73-lakh sq.ft nine-storey building stands on a 5.49 acre-plot of land and was inaugurated on October 11. Most of the facilities, including the public grievance redressal system, were shifted from the old Commissionerate on Pantheon Road, Egmore.

Petitioners who go to the Commissionerate on week days between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. have to make their way through the queues and security checks and are keen on a place to rest. “I came along with my daughter, who has gone in to lodge a complaint with the Commissioner on our land being usurped by a relative,” said Seethama, a resident of Villivakkam. “As only one person is permitted inside, I am waiting outside but have no place to sit. The policemen strictly told me not to sit on the lawns,” she added.

The lack of signboards is also a problem.
