Tension prevailed in Palavoyal for nearly an hour on Sunday after residents, angered over frequent road accidents in their locality, staged a road roko.

They blocked the road after a 35-year-old woman was run over by a trailer lorry on Sunday afternoon. According to the police, Latha, wife of Thangaraj, was a resident of Perumal Koil Street, Gnayiru. On Sunday afternoon, the couple was headed to Red Hills, with Latha riding pillion.

When they reached Palavoyal junction, a trailer lorry with Maharasthra registration, headed towards Karanodai from Puzhal, hit their two-wheeler. The couple fell off the vehicle and Thangaraj sustained minor injuries.

Latha suffered injuries on her legs and hips and later, died on the way to the hospital. Following this, more than 100 persons gathered at the junction and blocked the road.

“Residents have been demanding that the government construct a flyover. They said they would not move until they received an assurance that the flyover would be constructed,” said a police source.

The road roko lasted an hour. The police had to use lathis to disperse the crowd.
