The stage was set for a celebration of theatre as veterans of the field were honoured at the International Theatre Artistes’ Day by Krishna Gana Sabha on Thursday.

“Ages ago, when I entered the film scene, actors would be given significant roles only if they had a solid theatre background,” P.S. Sachu, member secretary of Tamil Nadu Eyal Isai Nataka Mandram, said. She recalled how theatre, once upon a time, was seen and used as an effective medium to spread important political and social messages.

Theatre artist T.D. Sundararajan, who was conferred the ‘SKGS Lifetime Achievement Award,’ said, “We are trying to bring life to stage and stage to life.”

Artists Kovai Paddhu, Dummies V. Sridhar, Geetha Narayanan and costume technician B. Thulasidas were given ‘SKGS Award of Excellence’.
