: The Madras High Court has directed the Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) to conduct random checks to verify the functioning of ‘goshalas’ (where cattle are maintained) in temples administered by the HR&CE Department.
In this process, the AWBI and the HR&CE department could be assisted by committed volunteers. As the efforts are a government exercise, the volunteers should gear up to the task.
The First Bench comprising Chief Justice S.K.Kaul and Justice M.M.Sundresh was disposing of a writ petition by one Radha Rajan. The petitioner submitted that a list of volunteers would be submitted.
The court ordered that the Animal Welfare Board of India should file a progress report at least three days prior to the date of compliance of the court order, June 9.
