Retains top spot among 16 constituencies in the district for the second year in a row
With the largest number of voters, Velachery continues to retain the top position among the 16 constituencies in the district.
According to draft electoral rolls released by district election officer Vikram Kapur on Tuesday, 34.49 lakh electors have been enrolled in 3,254 parts of the 16 assembly constituencies in Chennai.
As many as 17.23 lakh men, 17.25 lakh women and 541 others are on the electoral roll. The number of electors on the draft electoral rolls published last year in Chennai district was 33.57 lakh.
Velachery (with 2.47 lakh voters) had emerged as the assembly constituency with the largest number of electors in Chennai district after the special summary revision last year.
This year, there is a rise in the number of electors in the three assembly constituencies of Dr. Radhakrishnan Nagar (from 2,11,581 to 2,14,309), Perambur (from 2,46,525 to 2,48,471) and Thiru-vi-ka Nagar (from 1,98,102 to 2,00,891).
These three areas had shown a dip in the number of voters in the previous summary revision in 2013: Dr. Radhakrishna Nagar (from 2,12,224 to 2,11,581), Perambur (from 2,53,149 to 2,46,525) and Thiru-vi-ka Nagar (from 1,98,186 to 1,98,102).
Last year, the Chennai district election office had attributed the dip in the numbers to intense field verification by officials who identified a large number of multiple entries in the rolls of some constituencies.
In 2012, Perambur lost the top position among the 16 assembly constituencies to Velachery on account of deletion of a large number of electors in many localities. This year, the constituency continues to be in second place with 2,48,471 electors on the rolls.
The district election office has requested residents to enrol their names in the rolls. A special camp will be held on October 6, 20 and 27 in all polling booths for distribution and receipt of forms 6, 7 and 8.
As many as 45 authorised browsing centres will also offer the services for a fee.
