Vehicle-users to be sensitised to parking norms

Month-long community outreach programme to be held in connection with Park(ing) Day

September 16, 2011 08:58 am | Updated 10:04 am IST - CHENNAI:

The Chennai Traffic Police in association with the Institute for Transport and Development Policy and Chennai City Connect Foundation has planned to celebrate Park(ing) Day on Friday and launch a month-long community outreach programme thereafter to sensitise vehicle owners to various parking-related issues.

According to police sources, an in-depth analysis of vehicle population and parking space in the city would be undertaken as part of the initiative. Awareness would be created among road-users not to patronise commercial establishments that do not provide space for parking vehicles. A drive would be launched against wrong parking. Park(ing) Day is observed on September 16 every year in 180 cities across 30 countries.

Since off-street parking was limited in the city, the police would identify and design places for temporary on-street parking on an experimental basis along that are wide and underutilised. Traffic diversions and parking changes would be made, as a trial measure, to evolve a workable solution for hassle-free parking in the city, the sources said. Public could send suggestions on traffic improvement by sending email to addlcop.traffic@gmail.com.
