Month-long community outreach programme to be held in connection with Park(ing) Day
The Chennai Traffic Police in association with the Institute for Transport and Development Policy and Chennai City Connect Foundation has planned to celebrate Park(ing) Day on Friday and launch a month-long community outreach programme thereafter to sensitise vehicle owners to various parking-related issues.
According to police sources, an in-depth analysis of vehicle population and parking space in the city would be undertaken as part of the initiative. Awareness would be created among road-users not to patronise commercial establishments that do not provide space for parking vehicles. A drive would be launched against wrong parking. Park(ing) Day is observed on September 16 every year in 180 cities across 30 countries.
Since off-street parking was limited in the city, the police would identify and design places for temporary on-street parking on an experimental basis along that are wide and underutilised. Traffic diversions and parking changes would be made, as a trial measure, to evolve a workable solution for hassle-free parking in the city, the sources said. Public could send suggestions on traffic improvement by sending email to firstname.lastname@example.org.
