Chennai district election office has issued show cause notice to 17 flying squads for allegedly deviating from the prescribed route and failing to cover vulnerable pockets.

The district election office is tracking all flying squads using vehicle tracking software in the three constituencies of North Chennai, South Chennai and Central Chennai.

Returning officers of all the three constituencies are monitoring the movement of flying squads in Chennai in the run-up to the elections.

Coverage of vulnerable pockets was found to be inadequate in areas such as New Washermenpet, B.V.Colony, Purasavakkam, Pulianthope, Chetpet, Swami Sivananda Salai and Besant Nagar.

Route deviations have been spotted in areas such as Ayanavaram, Vyasarpadi, Kilpauk, Egmore and Chetpet.

The software will continue to facilitate online monitoring of the locations where the flying squads are at work. Some of the vehicles were found to have stopped in localities not related to the complaint.

Returning officers or observers are studying the cause and will take action against the squad members concerned. The flying squads comprise a senior executive magistrate, a senior police officer, a videographer and armed police personnel.
