Beat the heat this summer with the trendy cotton collection featured at the handicrafts exhibition hosted by the Tamil Nadu Handicrafts Development Corporation at its Poompuhar showroom on Anna Salai here.
The exhibition, which is on till March 30, showcases an exquisite variety of handicrafts from Mumbai and Rajasthan. Besides the customary oxidised silver jewellery and Jaipur gemstones, there are also paintings done in various materials from silk, wood to palm leaf.
Kimono-clad Japanese cloth dolls embossed in bamboo wall hangings and toys made of marble dust are good buys.
A wide variety of chikan kurtas from Lucknow, cotton handlooms from Rajasthan and elegant and comfortable collection of Madurai Chungudi saris are on display.
A.S. Raghavan from Madurai said that the traditional Chungudi has been replaced by a variety of new motifs with zari border that are screen printed on the sari. Some even have two borders in different colours.
These have evoked good response from customers.
But, there are not enough people to do the tie and dye design that is traditional technique of Chungudi.
Lacquerware bangles, pashmina shawls, bronze statues, brass lamps, Rajasthani cloth dolls and bags are also on display. Officials at Poompuhar said they expect the exhibition to record a sale of Rs.15 lakh.
It was Rs.10 lakh last year.
