It was a hugely disappointing Friday for thousands of Kamal Haasan fans, as his latest movie Uttama Villain failed to keep its date with them across major markets. It could turn out to be a frustrating weekend as the crisis over the release of the film is yet to be resolved.
The opening day’s shows, scheduled for release on May 1 across major markets, including Tamil Nadu and Kerala, were cancelled after the co-producers of the film, Thirrupathi Brothers, failed to resolve financial issues.
Fans, who had eagerly booked the tickets days in advance, returned home vexed. Many fans on social media bemoaned the fact that Kamal Haasan’s recent films have faced some road-block or the other before release.
Since Friday morning, sources close to producer kept assuring the public that shows would be screened by evening in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala and other States. But doubts whether the film will release at least on Saturday persisted, as settlement talks between Thirrupathi Brothers and their financiers were yet to reach a conclusion till Friday night. A source at a popular theatre in a suburb in Chennai told The Hindu that he had decided to screen other movies the minute he heard that the producer’s debt had run into a few crores.
