Usher in prohibition on Independence Day, says Vasan

The Tamil Manila Congress (TMC) on Friday urged the State government to pass orders for prohibition on Independence Day.

A resolution at the party’s executive committee meeting said even if total prohibition could not be implemented immediately, first steps towards this should be initiated on Saturday.

The meeting also urged the government to take serious steps to overcome drinking water scarcity across the State and resolve the NLC workers issue amicably.

Earlier, speaking to party women wing members, Mr. Vasan said they would be given priority during the selection of candidates for the Assembly polls.

Ramadoss plea to CM

PMK leader S. Ramadoss requested Chief Minister Jayalalithaa to make an announcement for prohibition while addressing the state on the Independence Day. In a statement here, he said even though Tamil Nadu was afflicted by draught, water scarcity, poverty and unemployment, liquor had emerged a major social problem, requiring immediate intervention from the State government.

Recalling the film — Neenga Nalla Iruakkanum — made by the state government to create awareness the evils of liquor, Dr Ramadoss said Ms Jayalalithaa herself had said that those who consume liquor had not only destroyed themselves, but all those who had depended on them.
