Bus route roads in the Chennai Corporation limits will soon have uniform signboards similar to those on New Delhi roads put up as part of the Commonwealth Games 2010.
The Chennai Corporation maintains 375 bus route roads in the city with a total length of 350 km. In the initial phase, at least 25 important roads maintained by the Corporation will have the new signboards, said a Corporation official. More bus route roads would get such boards later.
Officials had been asked to collect details about the signboards during a recent visit to New Delhi.
The stainless steel signboards would have names of the roads written on retro reflective sheet with the Chennai Corporation logo on the top left corner.
The signboards would have a dimension of 1,830 mm by 1,220 mm with names of roads written in Tamil and English in equal font size.
Corporation sources said that the new signboards would be like the one installed recently on Rajaji Salai, but with additional information.
In New Delhi, the names of roads have been written in four languages – Hindi, English, Punjabi and Urdu, the official said.
The width of the letters of the names of roads would be 150 mm in order to have optimum visibility. It would also have details of ward, zone and pin code number of the area through which the road passes. The total height of the signboard would be 1,970 mm.
The tender for procuring the signboards was floated recently for important bus route roads in Kilpauk, Triplicane, Nungambakkam, Adyar and Kodambakkam zones. Other zones are likely to be covered shortly.
