May 10, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:52 am IST - CHENNAI:

The Madras High Court has dismissed the bail pleas moved by the parents of Kausalya, a Caste Hindu girl, whose husband Sankar, a Dalit, was killed on March 14 in Udumalpet of Tirupur district by hirelings allegedly engaged by the girl’s family to protect ‘family honour.’

Dismissing the applications moved by the parents of the girl, Chinnasamy and Annalakshmi, and another person accused in the case, Vacation Judge Justice P. Kalaiyarasan said, “Enlarging the accused on bail will have its own impact on the society … there is possibility of tampering (with) the evidence, hence this court is of the considered view that under the present circumstances it is not conducive to grant them bail.”

On March 14, in a suspected case of honour killing, Sankar was hacked to death in broad daylight and his wife Kausalya was grievously injured. The attack by three assailants was captured on CCTV.

Sankar, a native of Kumaralingam near Udumalpet, and Kausalya, hailing from Palani in Dindigul district, were students of a private engineering college in Pollachi where they fell in love.

The judge said there is possibility of the accused tampering with the evidence
