A trip to the Chembarambakkam Lake on Sunday afternoon proved fatal for a two-year-old girl who drowned after her father, who was carrying her, slipped and dropped her in the water.

The accident took place around 3.30 p.m. when Tajun Nisha came along with her father Rizwan (32), a crane operator, mother Mumtaz (30) and brother Ashraf (6). The family resides in Periyar Nagar, Nandambakkam.

With Mumtaz clinging to his back, Rizwan carried the children into waist-deep water. While he was walking towards land, his leg hit a stone and all three fell into the water. The father regained his ground and managed to rescue the boy but Nisha had drunk lot of water. He carried an unconscious Nisha to the bank. The couple rushed the child to a hospital but doctors there pronounced her as ‘brought dead,’ police added.

Kundrathur police sent the child’s body for post-mortem to the Government Chromepet hospital.
