Adding to the count of violent crimes against women in the city over the past few months, a 90-year-old woman who was brutally attacked in St. Thomas Mount, a fortnight ago, succumbed to injuries on Thursday evening.

Earlier in the day, a 49-year-old woman was attacked in Kolathur. She too died of injuries, later.

In St. Thomas Mount, S. Pushparani died minutes after she was brought home from hospital, where she underwent treatment for her injuries in the assault on November 8.

Pushparani lived alone in her house on Magaliamman Koil Street, off Butt Road, ever since the death of her husband P.S. Samuel, a former inspector of police.

On November 8, she had returned from her daughter’s place in Medavakkam.

Two days later, she was found unconscious in bed by Mercy, another daughter, who had come with some breakfast for her mother.

With the help of neighbours, Mercy took her mother to a private hospital in Porur.

“She was assaulted and her gold jewellery, including earrings, bangles and neck chain, and a sum of Rs. 8,000 kept in the house were robbed. Her clothes were ripped apart by the assailants,” an investigating officer told  The Hindu .

“Grandmother responded well to treatment, but her condition deteriorated a few days ago. She wanted to go home on Thursday, so we moved her home. She died soon after,” said Nancy Roy, Pushparani’s granddaughter.

Suspects held

The police registered a crime case and arrested a few suspects and also recovered the stolen jewellery.

On Thursday, in Girija Nagar, Kolathur, G. Hemavathi was found lying on the floor of her second-floor flat by a neighbour.

A money lender, she lived with her son Karthik, who owns a textile showroom nearby. He had left for work on Thursday morning, leaving her alone at home.

“Around 4 p.m., the neighbour found the door to Hemavathi’s flat open. She stepped inside to find the woman lying unconscious with an injury on her forehead,” a police officer said.

She was rushed to Kilpauk Medical College Hospital, but succumbed to injuries around 8 p.m.

On Tuesday afternoon, an 87-year-old man living alone in Choolaimedu was murdered.
