Two engineering students died, and another sustained injuries, in a road accident on Rajiv Gandhi Salai at Ilavanthaangal near Thaiyur on Friday night.

According to the police, the students — Varun Prasath of Mallapoompatti in Salem district, Surya Chandramoorthy of Kirlapoosh Mandal in East Godhavari district, Andhra Pradesh, and Vethashree of Nagpur — were on their way back to Semmanchery from Mamallapuram when the motorcycle on which they were travelling collided with a stationary lorry late on Friday night. While Varun and Surya died on the spot, Vethashree sustained grievous injuries and was admitted at a private hospital.

All the three were pursuing their engineering courses in a private institution on the outskirts of Chennai and had taken rooms on rent near the institution at Sholinganallur, the police said.
