A class XII student and final-year B.Com student died in separate incidents at their homes on Sunday

A female class XII student and male final-year B.Com student committed suicide in separate incidents at their homes near Tambaram on Sunday evening.

R. Shanmuga Priya, a student at a matriculation school in Pammal, was a resident of Adam Nagar. On Saturday evening, the girl’s father dropper her at a classmate’s house in Pammal. Shanmuga Priya was dropped back to her home by her friend late in the evening. On Sunday evening, she went to the first floor of the house, telling her parents that she was preparing for her practical examinations.

 

Some time later, her father went upstairs and knocked on the door and as there was no response, he broke open the door and found his daughter lying on the floor with severe burn injuries. She was rushed to the Tambaram Taluk Government Hospital in Chromepet, where she was pronounced dead on arrival. Doctors said the girl had set fire to herself using kerosene.

School authorities said the girl was extremely bright and talented, and was studying in the science group. Her death came as a shock to them, a school management official said.  Shankar Nagar police are investigating.

 Meanwhile in Chitlapakkam, N. Arun Kumar, a student of a private college, hung himself at his sister’s house on Sunday. A native of Krishnagiri, Arun Kumar was living with his sister on G.D. Naidu Street. He is reported to have suffered from severe stress and had apparently made an unsuccessful suicide attempt a few months ago. On Sunday evening, he hung himself from the ceiling, according to Selaiyur police who are investigating.
