Two men were admitted to a city government hospital, with symptoms of dengue.
K. Ravikumar (21), from Vaniyambadi was admitted to the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital on Wednesday morning and has had fever for one week. He had visited the Vaniyambadi General Hospital and the Vellore Medical College where he was diagnosed as positive for dengue. He has been given a unit of blood and two bottles of intravenous drips.
Earlier, Narendran (27) of Kannan Nagar, Madhavaram, was admitted around 8 p.m. on Tuesday. He complained of fever for four days and pain in his arms, legs and hips. “I went to a private clinic on Friday and they gave me injections. I was fine on Saturday and Sunday. But the fever returned on Monday so I came to GH,” he said. According to him, mosquitoes are a major menace in his area.
According to the duty doctor, Narendran’s blood samples have been sent to the laboratory for platelet count and the report, along with an abdominal scan, is expected on Thursday. “Dengue can only be treated with supportive care. The most common symptom is fall in the platelet count which we can help increase,” she said.
Hospital Dean V. Kanagasabai said the two admissions were “random cases”. However, there is panic in some parts of Madhavaram after the death of a woman patient in Stanley Hospital yesterday due to unknown reasons. The first case of death due to dengue was recorded by a private children’s hospital on Aug. 24. At that time, the Corporation denied the presence of dengue in the city and said the child had contracted the virus during a trip to Vellore.
Sources in Government Stanley Hospital said it had created a separate ward for admitting patients with suspected infections.
