Two men who used stolen credit card details of a Barclays Bank customer in UK to make online purchases of gold, electronic items, shoes and clothes worth over Rs. 2 lakh, were arrested by the Bank Fraud Wing of the Central Crime Branch here on Wednesday.
Sources with the CCB said Serman alias Gopalakrishnan (38) of Velachery and Venkatesan alias Venkatakrishnan (35) of Choolai were arrested at a courier firm in Anna Nagar when they came to collect an empty parcel planted by investigators.
A probe was initiated after the HDFC bank here came across the online purchases in their gateway. The bank authorities alerted the CCB team, who found out that the purchases were made from Chennai and the goods were received through the office of a well-known courier firm in Shanti Colony.
“We contacted the gold-dealer in Mumbai to whom the culprits made online payments and purchased gold. The dealer then mailed an empty parcel to Chennai.
The duo gave a bogus receiving address and collected items from the courier agency after they were contacted on a mobile number which they had given, the officer said.
The duo claims they purchased the credit card data online. But investigators suspect that they are only runners in the fraud, and a bigger group is operating behind them.
