On Monday, forest officials arrested two men for poaching aquatic birds at Thathanur Lake in Sriperumbudur taluk of Kancheepuram district.

They seized as many as 41 bird carcasses, which include 39 Common Coots and two Fulvous Whistling Ducks. Officials said the birds were sold to eateries.

“We received a tip off from residents that two men, who are from the Narikurava community had been regularly hunting in the area. Though they are local birds, many flocked to the lake in search of food,” said Tambaram Forest Range Officer N. Krishnakumar.

Meanwhile, the forest officials said that two men Subramani (55) and Kuppan (52) of Tiruvallur district were using insecticides on the vegetation to kill the birds. They were picked up by Forest officials and let off after a fine amount was collected from them.
