The Central Crime Branch of the city police arrested two men on charges of cheating 12 youths of over Rs. 44 lakh by promising them jobs in Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL).
Police sources said the prime suspect Pandidurai (52) of South Boag Road, T. Nagar, had befriended Paramasivam, who runs a grocery shop near the former’s residence. Pandidurai told Paramasivam that he was friends with some senior officers in BPCL and could help with placements for youths in the company. Paramasivam introduced 12 youths to Pandidurai who promised them postings in BPCL’s Chennai branch and collected Rs. 44.10 lakh.
Pandidurai, along with an accomplice Arun Krishnan, an employee of a courier firm and a resident of Chinthadripet, made fake call letters with the BPCL general manager’s signature and issued them to the job aspirants.
The youngsters realised they were cheated after they went to the BPCL office. Following a complaint lodged by Paramasivam at the office of the Commissioner of Police here, a CCB team probed the matter and arrested Arun a few days ago. He led the police to Pandidurai. The duo was remanded to custody.
