Three youths, including two students, were arrested on Monday for allegedly beating a 21-year- old man to death with a cricket bat on Saturday in Villivakkam.

After allegedly beating the victim, the three rushed him to the Kilpauk government hospital. They fled the spot when the hospital staff asked for personal details. One of the students confessed about the crime to his parents and later to the police, leading to the arrest of the trio.

According to police, Muralidharan (21), a B.B.A student, and his two friends — a 17-year old plus-two student and a 17-year-old mechanic — were playing cricket in a ground in Padi on Saturday evening. Satish, a resident of Muppili Amman Koil Street in Villivakkam, and his friend Parthiban, who were drunk, wanted to join the game. But the three refused and an argument ensued between them. “In a fit of rage, the trio assaulted Satish with a cricket bat. He fell down unconscious and the trio rushed him to a private hospital in an autorickshaw. From there, they took him to Kilpauk government hospital,” said K. Kannan, assistant commissioner of police, Villivakkam.

Upon reaching the hospital, the man was declared brought dead. “The three fled the hospital when the staff asked them about their details and that of the victim. We gathered information about the deceased by going through man missing complaints in various stations,” said Mr. Kannan.

The plus-two student informed his parents about the incident. They informed the police and all three youngsters were arrested. Muralidharan has been remanded and the other two have been sent to the juvenile home.
