The National Green Tribunal, southern bench, on Wednesday asked the Chennai Corporation to maintain status quo on the construction of a sewage pumping station in a temple tank at Ullagaram, following an application from residents.

The Bench, comprising judicial member, Justice P. Jyothimani and expert member, Prof. R. Nagendran, directed the chief environmental engineer of the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board and the corporation zonal officer to inspect the spot and file a report before August 5.

The Ullagaram Vaazhum Makkal Podhu Nala Sangam had submitted that the Draupadi Amman temple tank was the main groundwater recharge source for the area.

In 2007, the Ulagaram-Puzhuthivakkam Municipality had planned a sewage pumping station in the tank, but the plan was dropped due to public protest. The civic body has now revived the plan.
