Work on building a travelator connecting the two terminals of the Chennai airport has finally begun and passengers may be able to use it by March next year. The travelator facility with a length of 600 m is expected to cost ₹40 crore.
Officials of the Airports Authority of India said that the prefabricated material for the travelator was now being assembled step by step. “There are several such prefabricated segments. Along with this, we also will build a walkway alongside the travelator. People who don’t want to use the travelator can use it. Both these will be covered facilities with a false ceiling roof,” an official said.
Passengers from the entry point of the terminals can use the lift or the stairs to get the mezzanine level and then take the travelator, he added. “This facility will also be connected to the Metro Rail station at the airport. An escalator was installed recently in that station,” he said.
