Training for the visually impaired

As he sits in front of the computer screen U. Yuvaraj instantly types out his name. “It is not sufficient that I can type with ease. Knowledge in software like Microsoft Word and Excel and browsing the internet, is indispensible and would be of help when I pursue higher studies or look for a job,” he says.

The one-month summer programme organised by the Model Resource Centre of Disability Services (MRCDS) of Loyola College endeavours to train visually-impaired students in the basics of computer. Delivering the inaugural address Ramesh Bhashyam, senior manager – systems, Sundaram Motors TVS said, ample opportunities are provided by the Central government and various organisations for students with visual impairment to develop their skills.

“Opportunities for students with visual impairment are available in sectors such as BPOs, medical transcription and the IT companies. But basic computer knowledge is a must for entering any sector,” he said
