The Wildlife week celebration at Vandalur zoo this year was focussed on providing hands-on training to school students.
Assistant Director of the zoo K.S. Sathyamoorthy said, “We decided to impart practical training to 25 students a day throughout the celebrations, which began on Saturday. Over 100 students underwent training at the zoo since then and 25 more are expected on Friday, the last day.” The students from different schools in and around Vandalur area were allowed to work as Junior Animal Keepers in the bird enclosures throughout the day along with the regular animal keepers. Their work was from 9.30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and involved assisting the animal keeper in cleaning, changing water, cutting fruits and vegetables besides observing the behaviour of birds.
P. Sriram, a fourth standard student from D.A.V. School, Velachery, said, “It was a good experience. Now we know how to take care of birds. The day-long programme was very interesting,” he said.
