The Trailers Owners Association, Chennai Port Trust Trailer Lorry Drivers and Cleaners of Anna Labour Union and other labour unions on Tuesday called off their four-day strike following an assurance from Chennai Port Trust Chairman Atulya Misra that the Tiruvottiyur-Ponneri-Panchetti (TPP) Road would be made motorable in a month.
Mr.Misra, officials of DP World Chennai, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and representatives of various labour unions carried out a survey of the TPP Road and identified the spots that had to be rectified. Besides, a 12-member committee was formed to review the work on a weekly basis.
“We have decided to call off the strike after receiving a written commitment from the ChPT Chairman that the patch work will begin within a week's time. At the meeting, Mr. Misra said that the road would be ready in a month and every effort will be made to make Ennore – Manali road a four-way lane at the earliest. This committee will meet once in two months, until the completion of the project,” Trailers Owners Association Secretary, S.R. Raja told The Hindu .
According to Mr. Raja, the committee will consist of six representatives of transporters, two each from Port and labour unions, and one from Chennai Container Terminal and an engineer.
It was also agreed by the members to ply single container until the completion of the patch work.
Mr. Misra said: “Today we inspected the road and found that about six km of road has to be repaired. Though it is bad in some stretches, it is repairable. It is dreadful to drive in some parts, while State Highway road towards Ennore is in good condition. The NHAI has already commenced the repair work and it will be set right in the next 20 to 25 days.”
K. Asai Thambi of Anna Labour Union said that they have called off their strike and would ply single container.
They have communicated the matter to their members and it might take a day to resume the operations.
