Traffic police go soft on enforcement

From Friday, the city traffic police were to strictly ensure that drivers carried the original driving licence but the drive fizzled out as the day progressed, especially after the observations made by the Madras High Court.

Traffic police personnel, while conducting vehicle checks, stressed on the need for carrying original licence to the motorists but refrained from enforcing it strictly.

‘No special drive’

A senior police official said that there was no special drive to nab persons without original driving licence. “Today, we conducted routine vehicle checks on over speeding, drunken driving, red-light jumping, not wearing helmets and seat belts, use of mobile phones while driving and over loading,” he said.

Cab drivers complained they were finding it difficult to manage without the original driving licence. Mani, a driver with Uber, said he had picked up a fight with his car owner. “He refused to give me my driving licence despite knowing that the police would fine me or send me to jail,” he said.
