With the puja holidays getting over, Chennaiites who went out of town and returned on Tuesday had to contend with chaos and confusion as traffic jams became the order of the day due to the huge pile-up of vehicles.
Traffic went haywire on G.S.T. Road in Urapakkam, Vandalur and Perungalathur. Railway stations too offered little respite for commuters.
It was business as usual on Tuesday morning as traffic resumed. Koyambedu, Poonamallee, Perungalathur, Guindy and other important parts of the town slowly got crowded.
Soon there were traffic snarls in the town with motorists rushing to get to work, schools and other places on time.
The transport corporation was overwhelmed by the sudden rush as buses overflowed with passengers. Traffic police took special measures to ease traffic, but their efforts did not help much.
K. Kavithalakshmi, who was waiting for an EMU train at Perungalathur, said trains were overcrowded and she had to wait for 40 minutes, but she could only get into a crowded compartment of an EMU train to reach her house in Choolaimedu.
The holidays coincided with Sunday and Gandhi Jayanthi on Monday. Thus, many got four days of holidays in a row.
