Showing the way forward to residents and commercial entities, the Sriperumpudur town panchayat office installed a solar rooftop power system.
The 3,000-watt solar power plant, installed last week at a cost of Rs. 4.60 lakh, would meet electricity requirements during office hours, an official said. Power generated through this non-conventional energy system is more than sufficient to operate the computers, ceiling fans, CFLs and tubelights on the ground and first floors of the building during work hours, the official said.
There was also facility to store the excess solar power generated, the official said, adding conventional energy would be used in the night to power signboards and fixtures.
The civic body hopes to cut down its bi-monthly electricity tariff by about 50 per cent.
