On the occasion of the World Environment Day (June 5), hotel The Leela Palace Chennai, took the initiative to beautify the area of MRC Nagar and raise environmental awareness within the community.

The initiative has been spearheaded by The Leela Palace Chennai to make the city clean and green. Earlier, the hotel had initiated a sapling plantation drive in and around MRC Nagar and has so far planted a mammoth number of 1,000 saplings around the vicinity. This is the second time that the group offered its service to the neighbouring residents. The activities, a part of the Greenwave initiative, were first announced in January 2012.

Speaking on the initiative, Mr. Pascal Dupuis, General Manager, The Leela Palace, Chennai said, “As a group, we undertake a plethora of environmental drives and believe in setting living standards of the highest order through our endearing and warm service.”

On World Environment Day, cadets of 1 Tamil Nadu Girls Battalion National Cadet Corps, Chennai, attending a 10-day camp at Kattankulathur, undertook a tree plantation drive in the area. They planted 200 tree saplings along the National Highway, opposite to the Kattankulathur Railway Station, close to the Maraimalainagar Municipal Office.

The tree saplings were provided by Tree Bank Trust, Virugambakkam. Sathyanarayan Easwaran of the Trust actively participated in the drive.

The Maraimalainagar Municipality also took part by ensuring water supply through water tanker for the saplings. 1 Tamil Nadu Girls Bn NCC is commanded by Lt. Col. T.J. Zacharia.

Ascendas, business space provider, launched the annual Green Month Campaign at International Tech Park Chennai (a joint venture with TIDCO), on June 5. The month-long campaign in its fifth year aims to promote green practice and participation amongst its tenants and Parkites (the employees working in the Park). As part of the celebrations, an Eco Art Exhibition was conducted. The exhibition, which was on till June 8, featured a mix of creative work by various artists using waste materials to highlight pressing environmental issues and to create awareness through drawing, painting, installation and collage.

The two large installations by artists Shailesh BO and Sasi Kumar K. were also on display.
