Tourism department to release mobile apps

Tamil Nadu Tourism department is planning to develop mobile apps to help tourists learn about tourist sites in the State, Tourism Minister, Vellamandi N. Natarajan announced in the Assembly. The department is also developing a mobile app in eight languages specific to Mamallapuram.

Replying to the demand for grants for his department, Mr. Natarajan said the department would conduct 96 traditional and folk art programmes every weekend at Kalaivanar Arangam in Chennai, Maragatham Park near Mammallapuram bus stand, and Saraswathi Mahal in Thanjavur.

The department is planning to install solar panels, at a cost of Rs. 4 crore, in 20 hotels owned by the Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation in the State. The department will spend Rs. 4 crore for the purpose, the minister said.

A permanent bridge will be set up at Island Grounds to connect it with the other side of Cooum river, at a cost of Rs. 3 crore. A tourist information centre and a ‘Site Museum’ at Kancheepuram and Mamallapuram will be set up, Mr. Natarajan said.

About 100 artefacts and 200 small artefacts at the Government Museum in Egmore, will get display boxes, lights and other security measures, P Benjamin, Minister for School Education, sports and youth welfare, said.
