With city police commissioner, S. George, failing to turn up before the Madras High Court on Friday in a case relating to alleged cheating, the judge has posted the matter for January 17.
Justice A. Arumughaswamy had directed the city police head to appear on Friday to inform the court about the status of the case.
The case is related to a petition by D. Sridhar of Ekkaduthangal, who said that he had preferred a complaint with the commissioner in April 2005 about Rajamani and other directors of a company who were refusing to sell him a piece of land even though he had made payments to the company on various dates.
Hence, Mr. Sridhar said it was a case of cheating and breach of trust. Justice Arumughaswamy had said that considering the facts and circumstances, it was clear that the sale deed had not been executed and repeatedly, the officer concerned had filed negative final reports in spite of the High Court’s directions.
When the matter came up, the judge asked whether action had been taken against the erring police officials. He also wanted to know whether the police commissioner would be appearing before the court.
Joint commissioner of police, central crime branch, S.N. Seshasai, was present. Advocate-general, A. Navaneethakrishnan, replied that the commissioner was conducting a meeting.
The judge said that action should be taken against the officials concerned. The AG said appropriate action would be taken.
Justice Arumughaswamy also asked as to what the difficulty was in the commissioner’s appearing before the court. He later adjourned the matter to January 17.
The judge also asked why the joint commissioner had not come to the court in uniform. When told he was in the crime branch, the judge said the JC should come in uniform and then say he was attached to the crime unit.
