The absence of streetlights and use of high-beam headlights are proving to be a deadly combination for motorists on Vandalur-Walajabad Road. The problem starts right at the beginning of this State highways — at the Vandalur railway gate flyover where a lamppost at Gangai Amman Koil Street is the only source of illumination.

The high-beam headlights of vehicles coming in the opposite direction blind motorists.

A huge number of motorists from Mannivakkam, Adhanur, Urapakkam, and Walajabad take this stretch every day and they have to take rash driving, speeding and lane indiscipline in their stride.

S. Parthiban, a resident of Vandalur, said the worst-affected are the pedestrians as there is no dedicated walkers’ path.

“Given the speed at which vehicles travel on this stretch, poor illumination assumes greater significance as a risk factor ,” N. Siva, a resident of Mannivakkam, said.

Efforts to contact the authorities proved futile.
