The district environmental engineer, Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board, Kancheepuram, has submitted to the member secretary of the Board that a plastic unit be directed to shut down.
“It is submitted and recommended that direction may be issued to the unit under Section 33 (A) of Water (P and CP) Act, 1974 and Section 31 (A) of the Air (P and CP), Act, 1981 for closure of the unit and disconnection of power supply,” said the note from the district environmental engineer.
The development comes in the wake of a protest staged by residents of Chamber’s Colony, Chromepet, in February, urging Pallavaram municipality and other government agencies to step in and shut down the plastic waste-recycling unit.
Following this, an inspection of the plastic unit, located on CLC Line, was done and it was noted that, among other things, no air pollution measures were provided at the grinding machine and housekeeping was poor. However, it also noted there was no generation of trade effluents.
The note submitted by the environmental engineer was categorical in stating that the unit was carrying out collection, segregation of plastic waste and grinding the waste within the premises using the machine, without obtaining the consent of the Board.
