The Bar Council of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry has resolved in its general body meeting here on Thursday to request the Bar Council of India to reconsider its September-22 order suspending 15 advocates affiliated to the Madurai District Bar Association from practising in any forum.

The State Bar Council has also resolved to meet Chief Justice of Madras High Court S.K. Kaul to request him to reconsider the order cancelling the license granted to the Madurai District Bar Association to occupy the District Court premises in the larger interest of legal community and to maintain cordial relationship between the Bar and the Bench.

The general body of the State Bar Council, which was convened on Thursday in view of the actions initiated by the BCI and the Madras High Court Registry against advocates, has unanimously decided to constitute a Special Committee, comprising its members K. Ranganathan and M. Varadhan, and to nominate a senior advocate to be a co-opt member to conduct disciplinary proceedings against the advocates.

Apart from issuing show cause notice to the advocates who agitated inside the First Bench of the High Court with a demand to declare Tamil as official language of the court, the Council has also decided to issue notice to advocate and president of Madurai District Bar Association A.K. Ramasamy calling for explanation as to why he failed to disclose the ‘declaration of insolvency’ to the Bar Council, as contemplated by the Bar Council of India Rules, within one week from the date of notice.

Despite the resolutions, the general body has also authorised the Chairman of the Bar Council of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, to issue prohibitory order against the advocates, who are publishing and distributing pamphlets, handbills, banners and making unnecessary allegations against the judges.
