Tips to curb suicides

Families spending time together, involvement in sports and outdoor activities and creating peer groups to support one another can solve the worrying trend of increasing suicides among the youth.

This was the dominant theme of the discussion organised in the city last week by the Senior Citizens Group of Besant Nagar. Speakers at the event said that parental and peer pressure adds to the burden of youth in the city, who are already being weighed down by anxiety caused from needing to perform their best. Fear of failure and rejection also appear to be a cause.

Putting aside their own anxieties, parents should provide space for their children to share their life with them without holding anything back and this needs to start at an early age, a sports counsellor who spoke said.
