A 66-year-old man who was brought unconscious with a failing pulse rate was revived and is now recovering from a fatal condition.

The man fainted while having breakfast at home. At Fortis Malar, he was diagnosed as having suffered a severe heart attack and cardiogenic shock when his pulse rate hit zero in the emergency room. His heart ventricles were unable to function leading to irregular blood circulation. He underwent cardiopulmonary resuscitation and then taken to the cath lab.

Senior consultant and interventional cardiologist Madan Mohan who treated the patient said, “Cardiogenic shock is a very rare condition which is often caused by a severe heart attack. Not every heart attack experiences this rare condition, which can be lethal. Luckily the patient was brought and treated within 20 minutes after his collapse which was important. The patient responded well to the treatment and is now out of danger. He was discharged from the hospital in 15 days post his primary angioplasty.”

Cardiogenic shock is a complex degenerating clinical condition leading to multiorgan dysfunction. It begins when the heart is unable to provide sufficient resting pressure and flow, according to the specialist. Despite advances in management of the condition mortality rates remain high, according to a hospital release.
