After 65 Tamil organisations opposed the release of Pravin Gandhi’s film, ‘Pulipaarvai’, which has been accused of wrongly portraying Balachandran, son of LTTE chief Prabhakaran, as a child soldier, producer S. Madan stated that he is willing to kill the film if the Tamil groups do not approve the final cut.
Speaking at a press conference, Mr. Madan, who also appears as the LTTE chief in the film, announced that the film will be screened for the Tamil groups.
“The changes proposed by the leader of Naam Tamilar Katchi, Seeman and Tamil nationalist Nedumaran will be carried out. We will go ahead with the release only if the Tamil groups are satisfied with the film. I am willing to face losses and not release the film if they are not satisfied,” he said.
In a statement, the film’s director Mr. Gandhi said that the image of the child wearing the uniform had led many to believe that the film paints Balachandran as a war combatant. He insisted that it is far from the truth, “He is not portrayed as a war combatant. It is a dream sequence. In fact, the first scene in the film has Bala saying that children shouldn’t be involved in war. Mr. Seeman and Mr. Nedumaran have both seen the film and they are well aware of the context. Mr. Seeman praised the film even while stressing that Bala was merely a school kid.”
The filmmaker further said that the proposed changes will satisfy the protesting students as well. “We are in the process of digitally removing Bala’s uniform and certain dialogues from the film. The students had demanded similar changes. We are taking everyone’s opinion into account,” he said.
