By dawn they are two hardworking men toiling at their tiffin shop in Vyasarpadi. But by dusk, they turn burglars, that too striking specifically at mobile phone showrooms.

A special team of the Kodungaiyur police, on Monday, arrested Abu Tahir (29) of Vyasarpadi and Akbar Ali (30) of Tiruppur, who allegedly burgled over a dozen cellphone shops including in the city, other districts and States. The duo, who ran a tiffin shop in Mullai Nagar, Vyasarpadi, struck at cellphone shops overthe last couple of months and fled with expensive handsets. “They took it to various districts in Tamil Nadu and sold them saying they were factory rejects and also that they are imported handsets,” said an investigating officer.

Following a few cellphone shop burglaries in Kodungaiyur and Vysarpadi last month, the special team was formed. “A shop owner who was burgled gave us IMEI numbers of the lost cellphones. We tracked one number to a cellphone in Kambam. Investigations led us to the two,” he said.

Abu Tahir and Akbar Ali were arrested and 127 stolen handsets and Rs 2 lakh cash were recovered. They were remanded in custody and sent to Puzhal prison.
