Three women killed in road accident near Chennai

Three women were killed in a road accident at Thiruthani, over 80 km from Chennai, when the van they were travelling collided with an SUV early on Monday. Fourteen others, including two children, escaped the accident with injuries.

Tiruvallur police sources said the accident took place around 2 a.m. at the Nedumparam village in the Kanakamma Chatram police limits when the van carrying 12 pilgrims was returning from Tirupathi. The van driver was trying to overtake a heavy vehicle when it collided head-on with an SUV with five people.

Eshwari (59) of Kancheepuram, her daughter-in-law Bhuvaneshwari (35) and their relative Nirmala (30) who were travelling in the van died in the accident. Nine others, including two children, who were travelling in the vehicle suffered injuries. The driver of the SUV and four passengers were also injured. All of them are admitted to different hospitals including the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital in Chennai for treatment. The condition of the injured is stable.

The family had gone to Trupathi on Saturday .
