Three teenagers, including twin brothers, who went for a dip in the Marina on Wednesday afternoon drowned in the rough sea.
The Anna Square police identified the deceased as brothers Bharat (17), a class X student, and Balaji (17), a polytechnic student, and their friend, Venkatesan (18), also a polytechnic student. All were residents of Perumal Koil Street in Kotturpuram.
The three teenagers along with three other friends went to had stepped out on Deepavali day for a movie. As they failed to get tickets they came to the sands of the Marina around 2.30 p.m. Bharat initially sat on the sands while the others were playing in the sea which was rough duo to the active monsoon. Suddenly, the five boys in the waters started struggling but three of them managed to run out. Balaji and Venkatesan were caught in the waves, and Bharat ran into the water to rescue his brother. But the strong tide pulled them all in. Following a frantic search for the three of them, the others rushed to the Anna Salai police for assistance.
The bodies of the missing boys were washed ashore at Pattinapakkam, Besant Nagar and Neelankarai, respectively, on Thursday morning.
