September 16, 2012 08:32 am | Updated 03:27 pm IST - KANCHEEPURAM:

Sunguvarchatram police have arrested three persons from Bihar on charges of attempting to steal gold in Pichivakkam hamlet.

According to police, the trio approached Vendamirtham (65) on Friday saying they were goldsmiths and would polish her jewellery.

Vendamirtham handed over her chain, weighing around four sovereigns and the trio – Ranjith, Pravin and Prakash – polished the jewellery using a chemical mixture.

When they handed the chain back, she found it had lost its sheen and was lighter. Vendamirtham raised an alarm and villagers nabbed and handed over the men to the police. On interrogation, the arrested confessed that they used to polish jewellery with a chemical compound to extract the gold.
