The Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate, Egmore, on Tuesday convicted three persons for running an illegal telecom set-up in Triplicane that was raided by the CBI in 2005.
An official release stated that the Economic Offences wing of the CBI framed charges that three persons were running an illegal telecom set-up from a building on Triplicane High Road. Incoming ISD calls were received on Internet using Voice Over Internet Protocol technology and the voice calls were delivered through local telephones with false caller line identification.
The internet connections obtained in the name of an employee of the accused and the telecom set-up were in operation in violation of the Indian Telegraph Act. The operation caused loss to the tune of Rs.57.5 lakh to the government by way of evasion of prescribed charges on ISD calls.
The accused were convicted for six months imprisonment on two counts and a total fine of Rs.3,150 imposed, the release added.
