Engineering aspirants this year will not have to wait to get their class XII marksheets before applying for Anna University’s engineering courses.

Instead, they can go online, download and print their results, and submit the printouts with their application forms.

The move, welcomed by students and parents, has been introduced to make the process of admissions faster and easier.

Up until last year, students had to wait for weeks before they could begin applying to colleges, as even after the class XII results were announced, schools took several days to give out marksheets.

“This time around, all students have to do is download their result, take a printout and send it to us along with their engineering counselling forms and copies of other required certificates,” said Rhymend Uthariaraj, secretary, Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions.

The printouts, he said, would be verified during the processing of forms. “We have collaborated with the department of school education and will check students’ records with data the department has,” Prof. Uthariaraj said.

“My daughter is writing five entrance tests this month, and so we are staying at a lodge here. We would have had to travel back to our hometown, Villupuram, to get the marksheet from her school and then come back to Chennai to submit a copy of it, as per the old rules. This new rule is a welcome change,” said R. Krishnaveni, a parent.

Sales of engineering applications at Anna University began on Saturday, and will go on until May 20. “This time, candidates can come and collect the forms and submit them even on Sundays,” said Prof. Uthariaraj.

Nearly 84,000 application forms were sold on Saturday.

To streamline the process, the university has employed 200 new candidates who are to be trained to handle admissions procedures and will work in different shifts.

“The whole process needs to be completed before June, as per the instructions of the All India Council for Technical Education as well as the Supreme Court,” said Prof. Uthriaraj.

Admissions to 552 engineering colleges in the State that have a total of 2 lakh seats will be decided during the counselling process later this month.
