The Chennai Corporation continues to pursue its objective of decongesting traffic in and around Thiruvanmiyur junction by constructing a flyover and a subway.
However, for want of funds it would implement the project — at the Lattice Bridge Road-Thiruvalluvar Salai-West Avenue junction — in a phased manner. In the first phase, either the subway or the flyover would be constructed, according to Corporation Commissioner D. Karthikeyan.
The civic body would not be able to execute the work at one go on account of financial constraints.
The land acquisition alone is expected to cost Rs.93 crore. A total of 52 grounds of private land has been earmarked for acquisition.
An earlier estimate of the construction cost of the flyover and the subway was Rs.33.76 crore. A detailed project report for the facilities was completed by Wilbur Smith Associates.
The DPR recommended a three-level solution for the traffic congestion at the junction. One level would be a four-lane flyover on L.B. Road 607 metre long and 17 metre wide. The ground-level road would also exist and the third level would be a four-lane subway along the West Avenue and Thiruvalluvar Salai linking East Coast Road with Rajiv Gandhi Salai.
The subway would be 330 metre long and 17.6 metre wide. The total width of service roads, including the footpaths, would be 9 metre.
The project was proposed in the 2009-10 budget of the Chennai Corporation. The Corporation would take a decision on the component of the project to be taken up first based on a study to be undertaken by its engineers shortly.
