R. Thirunavukkarasu, Deputy Commissioner of Police — Intelligence Section, Chennai, sees a guiding light in the famous work of Tamil poet-philosopher Thiruvalluvar and he encourages others to live by it. Together with his wife T. Lavanya Shobana and a team of animation experts, Thirunavukkarasu is engaged in an exercise to make short animation-story videos of all the couplets in Thirukkural. As of now, more than 50 videos are in the can.

“In 2011, when I was the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Madurai, I made sure that before the roll call every morning, the police personnel listened to a couplet from Thirukkural and its meaning. P. Kannappan, former Commissioner of Police, Madurai, was kind to let me introduce this feature, which was well-received by the police personnel,” says Thirunavukkarasu, a resident of Kilpauk.

“My mother K. Padma, a school teacher, inspired me a lot and would tell me to read Thirukkural every day. She played a key role in shaping my Tamil pronunciation.”

Thirunavukkarasu introduced this feature wherever he was posted — as Deputy Commissioner of Police, Tiruppur City, Superintendent of Police, Krishnagiri District, Assistant Inspector General of Police — Law and Order, Chennai City, and Deputy Commissioner of Police — Intelligence Section, Chennai.

S.N. Seshasayee, former Commissioner of Police, Tiruppur, and A.K. Viswanathan, Commissioner of Police, Chennai, extended their support to the initiative.

At the entrance of his cabin, Thirunavukkarasu has placed a white board, where he asks his colleagues to write couplet and its meaning every day.

Thirunavukkarasu also urges his family members to read a couplet with its meaning every day. Thirunavukkarasu can be reached at 9498177007.
